NAVAL ACADEMY DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC OUTREACH RECEIVES BLACK ENGINEER OF THE
YEAR AWARD

 

    ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Naval Academy Director of Strategic Outreach, Davede
Alexander, of Savannah, Ga., was recently named a recipient of the Black
Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for Diversity Leadership in Government.
The award will be given during the BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference scheduled Feb. 18-20.
A 2001 graduate of the Naval Academy and a former Navy football player,
Alexander received a Bachelor of Science degree in political science and
was commissioned as a Navy ensign.
He was assigned to the USS SHILOH (CG 67) in 2002, served onboard the USS
PREBLE (DDG 88) from March 2004 to October 2005 and was involved in
Operation Iraqi Freedom support roles.
    In October 2005, Alexander returned to the Naval Academy Admissions
Office, and was assigned to serve as the Northeast Regional Director.  As
Regional Director, he led outreach and mentorship programs aimed at
recruitment and retention of candidates and midshipmen.  After completing
his military service in March 2008, he transitioned to his current civilian
position as the Academy's Director of Strategic Outreach.
In his current role, Alexander has developed the Naval Academy's first
year-round Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program and has
helped to lead the Academy's outreach effort to attract and recruit
talented, young Americans who may have not previously considered the Naval
Academy, the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) and the Naval Academy's
Summer Seminar. 
    The BEYA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
Global Competitiveness Conference is a three-day event that distinguishes
individuals who have accomplished extraordinary career growth in government
and industry, lifetime achievement and pioneering feats.  The awards will
take place at the Hilton Baltimore Hotel and Baltimore Convention Center.
